Kuni Kanno

Nikoniko Kanno Farm

Born in Koriyama City, and currently living in the village of Iitate. After working as a nurse at a national hospital, Kanno Kuni worked as a public health nurse at a health and welfare office in Fukushima Prefecture, and took early retirement at age 52. Shortly prior to her plan to study polyphenol-rich “Natsuhaze” Oldham blueberries from April 2011 when her husband planned to retire from his position at an agricultural high school, she was evacuated to Fukushima City following the accident at Tokyo Electric Power’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. During her evacuation, she established a limited liability company with support of the Cabinet Office Employment Creation Project, to undertake Natsuhaze processing and sales. Since 2013 she has measured by herself the doses of wild vegetables and Natsuhaze cultivated by her father-in-law in Iitate village, where she has been living since returning in August 2016 before the evacuation order was lifted. She shares the story of her experiences measuring the doses of wild vegetables and living in Iitate village with students, from junior high school through university. As a member of the Iitate Village School Board, since October 2011 she has been devoting her energy to create an environment where children can live and receive an education with peace of mind.
