Asaka High School of Fukushima Prefecture student
Asaka High school of Fukushima prefecture, founded in 1884 as then-Fukushima Junior High school, celebrates its 135th anniversary, this year. In the beginning of its history, the school was located in the present Fukushima city, and was moved to developing Kuwano-village of Asaka county (now, Kaisei of Kooriyama city) in 1889 where the Asaka irrigation canal brought water from the Inawashiro-lake. The school, as one of the most prestigious educational schools of the prefecture, has produced lots of talented people since then. Some examples of cultural and literature excellence as alumni are Mr. Kanichi ASAKAWA (historian, Yale university), Mr. Masao KUME (writer), Mr. Sokyu GENYU (writer), Mr. Michihiko YANAI (creative director). A corner of the school site finds Asaka History Museum (Photo, National Cultural Treasury), a part of then-school building, brings an atmosphere of the former Junior High School to us. This museum became a shooting venue for a TV drama “Bocchan (a boy)” in which Arashi’s Kazuya NINOMIYA plays a main role in March 2016.
This year, in 2019, the school is designated as a Super Science High School, and is putting more focus on science and technology education the first time in 12 years. The freshmen who enter the school this year are proactively engaged in the subject research of “Community re-creation” as a whole class, and the students belonging to the science related club are more passionate in this regard. While the physics club are challenging radiation research as one theme, they are showing their interests to the learning of Fukushima restoration so as to know the realities after the great earthquake.
